FAQ

Below you will find answers to some of the more Frequently Ask Questions. If you have any further or more destination specific questions, please do not hesitate to Email Us .

What is Responsible Travel?

We like to refer to sustainable tourism rather than responsible travel or eco-tourism, as we believe tourism needs to be holistic, embracing a triple bottom line, a balance of sound economic, environmental and social best practice. By adopting this triple bottom line, we strive to create holidays that are both environmentally & socially responsible and benefit local communities. For further information see our Responsible Travel section on our website.

What makes your holidays different from other companies?

We like to combine “off the beaten track” places with the better known “must see” and “iconic” destinations so that you get to experience something different whilst not missing out on the highlights of your destination. We aim to provide authentic experiences that are sensitive to the environment and incorporate the culture and traditions of local communities.

What does tailor-making a holiday actually mean?

We provide a flexible travel service, tailor-making every itinerary to suit the needs of each individual client or group. We can tailor the duration of your trip, the dates, the itinerary itself by including specific accommodation, activities and destinations, and to some extent the budget. All you need to do is let our travel consultant know as much information as possible, as this will help us to put an itinerary together that is ideal for you. Tell us for example what your interests are, do you want to undertake any particular activities, visit specific destinations and if you are travelling with children (if so please let us know their ages). It also a great help to know whether or not you have travelled to Africa before and if so, which destinations you visited. For further information see Our Services section.

Do you offer group trips with set departure dates?

No only very rarely. As we specialise in tailor-made holidays, group trips are not our core activity. However we can tailor a holiday specifically for your travel group, i.e. small group of friends or family.

What countries do you offer?

We are Africa specialists and our core countries include Egypt & Jordan in northern Africa, Kenya & Tanzania in East Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique & South Africa in southern Africa. However we continuously research new destinations, so keep an eye out for new additions to our portfolio.

Can I combine various African countries?

Yes in principle you can, however you need to consider the vast distances between countries in Africa and the time & cost involved in additional travel.

What activities do you offer?

One of the main activities in Africa is obviously photographic wildlife safaris. However we offer a wide range of activities depending on the destination you visit. To name a few scuba–diving & snorkelling, mountain & desert trekking, hiking, birding, whale watching, cultural tours, watersports, beach relaxation, yoga and self-drive holidays.

Do you visit all these places yourself?

Yes we do. Our team visits and approves all accommodation, activities and operators in the destinations we promote. This enables us to give you not only expert advice, but also personal views on the suitability of an itinerary, activities and properties for your particular circumstances, whether this is a honeymoon or a family holiday, just ask our team.

Do you cater for families with children?

Yes, we do and travelling to Africa as a family can be one of the most rewarding and exciting family trips you will ever take. However, depending on the age of your children there are various issues you will need to keep in mind, e.g. malaria is endemic in most of the east and southern African countries, some lodges have age restrictions, safari with children and distances travelled. Feel free to contact us to discuss family friendly Africa holiday options with one of our travel consultants. For more information please see also our Travelling with Children section.

What vaccinations are required?

Vaccinations required vary according to the destination visited. Generally speaking Hepatitis A, Polio, Tetanus and Typhoid Fever are recommended and a Yellow fever certificate is required for some destinations. Please check our General Health & Travel Advice page and our destination specific Health & Travel advice pages on our website for more detailed info, but always visit your local travel clinic or GP for the most up-to-date information.

Do I need to take malaria tablets?

Malaria is endemic in the vast majority of east and southern African countries and is chloroquine resistant. Hence adequate malaria prophylaxis is vitally important. Again always visit your local travel clinic or GP for the most up-to-date information and to check on any personal medical complications.

What do I need to pack for a safari type holiday?

We have a brief packing list of what to bring on holiday on our website and normally the “less is best” rule applies. Note that luggage restrictions on some internal flights in Africa are often as little as 12-15 kg per person, preferably packed in soft bags (no hard suitcases!). To help keep luggage to a minimum, you can make use of laundry services, and towels and basic toiletries provided by hotels and lodges.

What is a guidance price for a 2 week holiday to Africa?

This is one of the most difficult questions to answer, as the prices of holidays vary considerably across the continent. Some of the more value for money destinations are Egypt, Jordan and South Africa and some of the most luxurious options can be found in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. Feel free to let us know your budget and we can advise you on what is feasible.

Do you offer budget tours?

No we are not a budget tour operator. We are mid-market to lower end upmarket, however like to think we sell value for money holidays.

Do you sell flights or do I need to book my own flight?

We sell flights and are fully ATOL bonded. We can offer the best airfares from the UK on most major airlines and can hold seats on British Airways, Kenya Airways and Emirates. If you prefer, you can buy your own flight, especially if you want to use Airmiles.

Is my holiday money financially protected?

Yes, your deposit and balance payments for air holidays and flights are fully protected under the ATOL scheme protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Holiday monies for non-air holidays are protected under the Bond Plus protection scheme.

Can I book online?

No, as our holidays are all tailor-made we have no online booking facility. However we try and make the booking process as easy as possible for you. Once you are ready to book, please ask our consultant to check availability for your specific dates and make provisional reservations with all the accommodations, so we are 100% sure that all the arrangements are available for your unique trip. Once this has been achieved, we will send you a personalised booking form by email, which you can complete and return by email.

How much do I pay upfront as a deposit?

You pay 20% deposit to confirm the booking and the remaining balance 8 weeks prior to departure.

How can I pay for my holiday?

You can pay in Pound Sterling by bank transfer, by UK debit card and all major credit cards.

Do you sell travel insurance?

With the change in Financial Regulations in the UK we do not sell travel insurance direct anymore. However Diplomatic Travel has teamed up with Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd to offer our travellers competitive travel insurance with excellent levels of cover.
